What is Behavioral Money Coaching?

I often get asked this question: What is behavioral money coaching?

And it’s typically followed by: How can money coaching help me?

So let’s dive into the answer to the first question:

Behavioral money coaching helps a client to unpack the stories and beliefs they have woven all around money and transform their relationship with money.

As a client starts to do the inner work and sift thru his/her money patterns, behaviors and beliefs, they begin to bring these into their conscious awareness.

Behavioral money coaching is the missing piece in many financial planning, discussion, training and coaching conversations.

Once someone is able to source their challenging characteristics surrounding money, they can begin to consciously shift these to more positive characteristics. Steps can be taken at the emotional, behavioral and spiritual levels as well as the practical level to transform a client’s relationship with money.

So how can money coaching can help you?

Let’s look at a case study of a recent client of mine who was unable to stick to a budget and feeling stress and anxiety around money.
What is Behavioral Money Coaching

When we dove into the patterns, stories and behaviors that were modeled during her childhood we were able to source where this was coming from.

Three of the money characteristics that were operating on a subconscious level included:

  • Her father’s belief that you spend it when you have it as it may not be there tomorrow.
  • Her mother’s resistance to money and avoidance of understanding it at all.
  • Her own carefree attitude towards money.

Once light was shed on these and other underlying challenges, this client was on her way to replacing them with more positive actions.

  • She began to check in on her money every day.
  • She began to do the healing work of forgiveness both for herself and for her parents in order to open her container to receive.
  • She slowed down her decision making process when making new purchases and focused on wants vs. needs and began to only bring those things into her life that would light her up.
  • She met with a financial planner and started to educate herself on where her money was coming from and where it was going.

So what is behavioral money coaching?
It’s a personalized, holistic approach to understanding your finances and your relationship with money.
