How are you finding JOY today? Maybe you woke up on the wrong side of the bed, spilled a bunch of coffee on your shirt as you drove to the office only to realize that you forgot the report that you were putting the finishing touches on back at the house. You turn around, grab the report, rush back to the office and arrive 15 minutes late to your meeting and it feels like everyone is now staring at your coffee stain. How the heck do you find JOY in this scenario? First - Realize we've all been there. YOU ARE NOT ALONE in having a crazy morning that feels all wrong. If you look closely, there's probably another coffee stain or two in that boardroom. Second - Remember to LAUGH at yourself. Laughter can provide the upswing to your mood - even if you have to fake it. As you drive back to the office, point at that coffee stain and laugh. Look around at other drivers and laugh. Allow your mood some levity and watch it rise! Third - Remember to be GRATEFUL. An attitude of gratitude goes a long way towards developing your spirit of inner joy. Be grateful that you have a car to drive to the office, that you have a job that provides you with the lifestyle you want to be living (and if it doesn't - then be grateful that you realize this and begin to take steps to find your next path.) Be grateful for the coffee with the caffeine that is waking you up and for the opportunity to present the report that you've worked so hard on these past several months. Be GRATEFUL for another day to be alive and living on this big, beautiful planet. Be GRATEFUL. Fourth - Put it in PERSPECTIVE. Oftentimes we get caught up in the negativity of a situation allowing one thing after another to pile up and bring us down. When we take a moment to pause, step back and look at the bigger picture, we allow ourselves the space to shift our energy and realize that this is a small blip in the larger scheme of living. We can choose to shift our perspective and focus on the positive aspects of our day and help infuse joy back into the moment at hand. And of course there's the Fifth scenario - Yell, scream, shout it all out. Short and sweet. Then MOVE ON. The key is to MOVE ON. Focus on the positive and don't let your energy spiral downward just because your day is not going smoothly. You have a conscious choice to continue down that path or to take the higher road. It's time to make lemonade out of those lemons. The next time you are having a bad day, make the choice to go in there and kick butt at presenting your report - coffee stain, late to the meeting and all!
